In western Utah the Bonneville Salt Flats are an expansive remnant of an ancient lake. The salt bed is solid enough to support automobiles and land speed records while at the same time containing enough moisture to settle to a near perfect flat level. The unvarying vista extends so far into the distance the curvature of the earth is visible.
